Bringing the Vision to Life
The client wanted a kitchen that felt spacious yet cosy, featuring a classic Aga cooker as a centrepiece. The first step was removing the wall between the existing kitchen and the underutilised dining room to create an open-plan layout. This not only enhanced the flow of the space but also maximised natural light, making the kitchen feel bigger and more inviting.

Key Challenges
Structural Integrity – Removing the dividing wall required careful planning to maintain support for the upper structure. During demolition, we discovered that a previous builder had used acrow props in the wall to provide stability. To preserve the integrity of the building while maintaining the aesthetic, we introduced a custom oak support beam and two additional posts, ensuring the space remained structurally sound.
Blending Old with New – One of the main challenges was ensuring that the modern kitchen extension complemented the period features of the cottage. The aim was to create a seamless blend of traditional charm and contemporary practicality without compromising on either style.
Constructing the Kitchen Extension
With a clear vision in place, we moved forward with the renovation, ensuring every detail was meticulously executed:
Open-Plan Layout – Removing the wall created a light-filled, free-flowing space that connected the kitchen to the rest of the home. The oak support beam not only provided structural stability but also added a rustic feature that tied in with the cottage’s aesthetic.
Timeless Kitchen Design – To strike the perfect balance between old and new, we installed a bespoke kitchen from Howdens. Traditional shaker-style cabinets were paired with modern hardware, while warm wooden accents added a cosy touch.
Aga as a Focal Point – The centrepiece of the kitchen was a four-oven Aga, positioned strategically to enhance both function and design. Surrounding it with open shelving and custom cabinetry provided practical storage while maintaining a timeless look.
Smart Storage Solutions – Incorporating a handcrafted Welsh dresser made from reclaimed wood found in the cottage allowed the homeowner to display cookery books and crockery, adding a personalised touch to the space.
Stylish Finishes – Lighting played a key role in elevating the overall ambiance. Industrial-style pendant lights above the island were paired with softer recessed lighting to create warmth. A neutral colour palette with subtle pops of colour in decorative elements brought everything together seamlessly.
Durable and Practical Flooring – To ensure longevity and ease of maintenance, we installed high-quality, durable floor tiles that complemented the cottage’s rustic charm while providing a practical solution for a busy kitchen.

The finishing touches were all about enhancing the character of the space. Hollyhocks were introduced as a decorative feature, bringing a burst of colour that added to the cottage’s homely appeal.
